About the game

A racing game for 2-6 players that simulates competitive powerboat racing using three-sided dice and a rolling-hex movement system. Players carry over dice from turn to turn, adjusting speed by adding or subtracting dice before rerolling, then choosing a direction to travel around a modular, double-sided board. Boats that can't make their intended distance take damage, and too much damage sinks the boat and hurts the next race. After three races on shifting buoy layouts, the highest total score wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Powerboats is a niche racing title with a genuinely clever risk-reward dice-management system for controlling speed and direction. The rolling-hex mechanic is more tactical than most racing games, forcing players to weigh acceleration against control. It's a light, quick-playing title well suited to casual groups looking for something different from typical racing games. The modular board's two difficulty sides add a bit of longevity.

What we like

  • Clever dice-carryover mechanic for controlling speed and direction.
  • Double-sided modular board adds variable difficulty.
  • Quick 60-minute playtime supports multiple races in a session.
  • Accessible rules suitable for younger players.

Keep in mind

  • Niche racing theme with limited market visibility.
  • Dice-based movement introduces significant luck.
  • Damage/sinking mechanic can knock a player out of contention early.

Who it's for
