About the game
Ad Astra casts players as one of five human factions colonizing the galaxy, terraforming planets and building advanced space colonies while uncovering ancient alien artifacts. Each round, players simultaneously place face-down action cards on a shared board, then resolve them in sequence, choosing production, movement, building, trading, or scoring. The card owner gains a bonus advantage when resolving their own action, creating clever tension around prediction and timing. The game ends once a player reaches 50 victory points or all planets are discovered.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editors like Ad Astra's simultaneous action-selection system, which creates satisfying mind games about what opponents will choose each round. Bruno Faidutti's design brings a real sense of interactive tension to a genre often dominated by solitary optimization. It's a solid pick for groups who enjoy 4X space exploration with strong player interaction.
What we like
- Simultaneous action-selection creates unique prediction-based tension.
- Rich 4X space theme with terraforming and colonization.
- Card ownership bonuses reward strategic action planning.
- Multiple viable strategies through production, trade, and combat.
Keep in mind
- 60-minute playtime with notable downtime rating for a mid-weight game.
- Requires a minimum of three players to work well.
- Action-card resolution order can be confusing for new players.
Who it's for
Best for strategy gamers, ages 13+, in groups of 3-5 who enjoy space exploration and simultaneous action-selection mechanics.
