About the game

König von Siam (King of Siam) is a political area-influence game set during Siam's 1874 power struggle between Malays, Lao, and Royalists. Players use a hand of eight one-time-use action cards to add or shift followers across regions, trying to control the faction that ultimately dominates each area. Careful timing matters, since pushing too hard risks inviting a British intervention that changes the victory conditions entirely. With no randomness once setup is complete, it's a tight game of pure positioning and timing.

Hobbli's Notes

König von Siam is a lean, cerebral area-control game that hinges entirely on reading the board and timing your limited actions: there's nowhere to hide behind luck. The team-based four-player option is a nice variant for game nights with an even number of players. It's a bit of a hidden gem for fans of tense, no-luck strategy games.

What we like

  • No luck once the game is set up.
  • Clever team-based option for four players.
  • Tight, meaningful decisions with limited action cards.
  • Distinctive historical Siamese setting.

Keep in mind

  • Niche theme and mechanics may not appeal broadly.
  • Sudden death ending can feel abrupt.
  • Can be hard to find, as it's out of print.

Who it's for

Best for strategy gamers aged 12+ who enjoy tight, luck-free political maneuvering, playing 2-4 (individually or in teams).
