About the game
Cartagena sends six pirate crews scrambling through an underground tunnel to escape the fortress of Cartagena and reach a waiting sloop. Players move their pirates by playing matching symbol cards, leapfrogging forward whenever another pirate already occupies a symbol space. The only way to refill your hand is to move a pirate backward to a spot with company, creating a constant tension between racing ahead and running out of cards. First team to get all six pirates aboard the ship wins. It supports 2 to 5 players in about 45 minutes.
Hobbli's Notes
Cartagena is a beloved classic for good reason - its card-and-symbol movement system is simple to teach but creates real tactical tension around managing your hand. The forward-and-backward push-pull keeps the game close right up to the finish. It's light enough for family game night but has enough bite to satisfy more experienced players in a filler slot. A dependable pick that's stood the test of time.
What we like
- Simple hand-management movement mechanic is easy to teach.
- Fun, accessible pirate escape theme works well for younger players.
- Quick 45-minute playtime fits most game nights.
- Clever push-and-pull between racing forward and drawing new cards.
Keep in mind
- Relies heavily on the luck of available card symbols.
- Can feel repetitive for more experienced gamers.
- Limited strategic depth compared to modern race games.
Who it's for
Great for families and mixed-age groups (ages 8+) who enjoy light, race-based games with simple hand management.
