About the game

An abstract strategy game for 2-5 players where the goal is to end the game with the fewest distinct groups of your tiles on a 9x9 grid. Each turn, players place one of three tile types (a letter, number, or sector symbol) and can capture opponents' tiles by legally replacing them, as long as doing so doesn't split their own group into pieces. Designed by Kory Heath, the game rewards careful spatial reasoning and long-term planning around tile connectivity. Ties are broken by whoever captured the fewest opposing tiles.

Hobbli's Notes

Blockers! is a clean, cerebral abstract strategy game that rewards players who can visualize how their groups will connect and split several moves ahead. Its enclosure-style capturing mechanic has real depth despite simple rules. At 40 minutes, it's a satisfying quick brain-burner for abstract game fans. Its low profile compared to bigger abstract titles is more a marketing quirk than a reflection of quality.

What we like

  • Clean, elegant abstract design with real depth.
  • Quick 40-minute playtime suits brain-burner fans.
  • Scales flexibly from 2 to 5 players.
  • Designed by respected abstract-game designer Kory Heath.

Keep in mind

  • Abstract theme (no story or setting) may not appeal to narrative-focused players.
  • Niche title with a smaller player base than mainstream abstracts.
  • Can feel dry for players who prefer thematic games.

Who it's for
