About the game
Manila sends 3-5 players to the docks of the Philippines, where they speculate on shipping runs of jade, ginseng, silk, and nutmeg. Bid to become harbour master, buy shares in risky voyages, and gamble on which ships will dodge storms and pirates to reach port. Dice ultimately decide each ship's fate, so shrewd betting matters as much as bold investment. It's a fast, tension-filled family game that plays in about an hour.
Hobbli's Notes
Manila hits a nice sweet spot between a light family game and a proper economic title: the auction for harbour master gives every round real teeth, and watching your invested shares live or die on a few dice rolls is surprisingly gripping. It won't satisfy hardcore Euro gamers craving deep strategy, but as a quick, social speculation game it holds up well. The pirate/shipping theme is thin dressing over solid mechanisms, though it's charming all the same.
What we like
- The harbour-master auction creates meaningful tension every round.
- Dice-driven outcomes keep the tone light and unpredictable.
- Rules are simple enough to teach a family group quickly.
- Betting on rivals' shipments adds a fun layer of social speculation.
Keep in mind
- Heavy reliance on dice can frustrate players who prefer pure strategy.
- The bidding phase can drag if players overthink it.
- Limited to 3-5 players, so it doesn't scale down to two.
Who it's for
Ages 10+ fans of light-to-medium auction and gambling games; best with 4-5 players looking for a fast, social family or gamer-night experience.
