About the game

In Naishi, two players compete to improve their Japanese state as efficiently as possible, but you can't simply rearrange your tableau however you like. Instead, you must replace cards in your hand and tableau with cards from a shared central river while respecting strict positioning rules. Sending emissaries lets you reorganize your state, open new opportunities, or force your opponent into an unwanted trade. It's a tight, quick two-player card game built around pattern-building and careful hand management.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team finds Naishi an intriguing tight two-player puzzle, though the source material is fairly brief and the title isn't widely reviewed yet. The positional replacement rule sounds like it should create satisfying tension around efficiency and denial, similar to other lean pattern-building duels. As a 2024 release, we'd recommend trying it out before committing to a full collection purchase.

What we like

  • Compact 20-minute two-player experience.
  • Interesting positional replacement mechanic.
  • Emissary actions add a disruptive strategic layer.
  • Streamlined rules for a quick session.

Keep in mind

  • Limited available information on long-term replayability.
  • Two-player-only design limits its use for groups.
  • Source description is fairly brief, leaving some mechanics unclear.
