About the game
Intarsia sets players in a Parisian café undergoing renovation, competing for the coveted contract to redesign its parquet floor with elegant wooden inlays. Each floor ornament is puzzled together piece by piece from the outside inward, with more complex multi-piece ornaments scoring higher. Players pay for wooden elements with material cards and build according to strict placement rules, racing to fulfill tool requirements before their rivals. A double-sided board offers an alternate layout for added variety across plays.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team appreciates Intarsia's meditative puzzle-building feel: it has the polished, elegant design sensibility you'd expect from a designer known for Azul and Tikal. The tool-requirement race adds just enough competitive pressure to keep the puzzle from feeling too solitary. It's a lovely, low-downtime strategy game for players who enjoy pattern-building, though we haven't logged extensive plays of this specific newer release. A strong pick for fans of tile and pattern games looking for something a bit fresher.
What we like
- Elegant puzzle-like inlay building from an acclaimed pattern-game designer.
- Satisfying set-collection race to fulfill tool requirements.
- Low downtime rating keeps turns moving briskly.
- Attractive Parisian café theme and quality components.
- Alternate B-side board adds replay variety.
Keep in mind
- Abstract puzzle focus may feel dry to strongly thematic gamers.
- Limited direct interaction between players.
- Moderate complexity may need a rules walkthrough for newcomers.
- Long-term replayability of this newer release is not yet well established.
Who it's for
Good for fans of pattern-building and abstract strategy games, ages 8-10 and up, in groups of 2-4.
