About the game
Beer & Bread is a two-player card game built around alternating rounds that create an intriguing rhythm to card drafting and resource management. Set on the shared fields of a former monastery, two villages compete in the friendly rivalry of brewing beer and baking bread across six years split between fruitful and dry seasons. Each player must balance harvesting, storing resources, producing goods, selling them for coins, and upgrading their facilities. The final twist is scoring: only coins from your weaker good, beer or bread, count at the end, forcing careful balance between the two economies. Designed by Scott Almes, it delivers a tight, clever multi-use card engine purpose-built for two players.
Hobbli's Notes
Beer & Bread stands out for genuinely being designed around two players rather than just scaling down a bigger game, and the balance-your-weaker-good scoring twist creates real tension every round. It's compact, quick to teach, and rewards tight planning without overwhelming complexity. Its exclusively two-player format is by design, so it won't serve larger groups. A smart pick for couples or duos who like a puzzly card game.
What we like
- Clever alternating-round structure built specifically for two players.
- Tight balance-your-weaker-good scoring creates real tension.
- Quick 45-minute playtime with strong player interaction.
- Multi-use cards add layers of strategic decision-making.
Keep in mind
- Strictly two-player only, limiting group flexibility.
- Thin thematic dressing over an abstract economic engine.
- Could feel too puzzly for very casual players.
Who it's for
Ideal for two players aged 10+ who enjoy tight card-drafting and resource-management duels, great for date nights or regular two-player game nights.
