About the game

In The Fox Experiment, you take on the role of a geneticist recreating the real-life Russian fox domestication study, breeding generations of foxes for friendliness and adorable traits. Each round you select parent foxes, gain their trait dice, roll and arrange them to complete trait symbols, and mark them on your pup cards. Trait tokens earned let you upgrade your personal player board, while the pool of pups constantly refreshes as prior generations retire. After five rounds, points come from patron bonuses, personal studies, board upgrades, and the coveted friendliest-fox award. It's a charming dice-and-set-collection game with real scientific inspiration from designer Elizabeth Hargrave.

Hobbli's Notes

We love the genuine science-communication angle here: basing the game on the real Belyaev fox experiment gives it a rare intellectual hook among dice games. The dice-arranging puzzle for completing traits is satisfying without being overly fiddly. It's accessible enough for family game night while still offering meaningful choices for gamers who enjoy drafting and set collection. Luck of the dice rolls can occasionally overshadow careful planning.

What we like

  • Unique, genuinely educational theme grounded in real science.
  • Satisfying dice-arranging puzzle each round.
  • Good solo mode and turn-order variety.
  • Approachable complexity for a wide range of players.

Keep in mind

  • Dice luck can swing outcomes more than some strategy gamers prefer.
  • Multiple scoring categories can feel busy for new players.
  • Turnover of the pup pool limits long-term planning around specific traits.

Who it's for

A good fit for families and casual-to-mid-weight gamers aged 10-14 who enjoy animals, dice puzzles, and light drafting, in groups of up to four.
