About the game
Riverside is a roll-and-write game set along a frozen northern river, where players run a boat tour company guiding tourists to see polar bears, reindeer, and the northern lights. Each round, players roll dice into a shared pool, then choose one color to fill seats on their guide boat sheet, aiming to complete rows for points. Completed rows unlock ongoing bonuses for future excursions in that color, adding a strategic layer to a normally simple format. The modular board changes the route each game, keeping the path fresh across plays. Whoever scores the most points guiding satisfied tourists wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Riverside elevates the roll-and-write genre with genuinely interesting long-term decisions: choosing when to fill short, low-value rows versus long, high-value ones keeps every round tense. Hobbli's team likes how the modular board and colored dice queues make each session feel different, which is rare for the genre. It's an excellent gateway into roll-and-write games for players who want more strategic texture than a simple dice-and-tick game.
What we like
- Modular board keeps the route and strategy fresh across plays.
- Clever push of filling long high-value rows versus short quick ones.
- Scales smoothly from solo play up to six players.
- Colorful, approachable theme makes roll-and-write mechanics feel fresh.
Keep in mind
- Roll-and-write format has limited physical interaction between players.
- Simultaneous play can occasionally cause pace mismatches at larger counts.
- Requires reusable or printable sheets for repeated play.
Who it's for
