About the game
Codex Naturalis has players continuing the work of an illuminating monk, layering cards depicting resources and gold onto a personal manuscript to score points. Each card you play must overlap the corners of cards already on the table, and choosing whether to play resource-rich or point-scoring gold cards is a constant balancing act. Public and secret objectives reward specific patterns and resource combinations, adding a satisfying layer of hidden strategy. The game ends once a player reaches 20 points, with one final round for everyone else to catch up.
Hobbli's Notes
Codex Naturalis is a fantastic low-downtime tableau builder: the corner-matching layering mechanism feels fresh, and the simultaneous play keeps everyone engaged even when it's not technically your turn. A great choice for gamers who love efficient puzzle-solving.
What we like
- Fast, low-downtime tableau building keeps everyone engaged.
- Simultaneous play means no waiting around for turns.
- Public and secret objectives add real strategic depth.
- Solo mode makes it a great choice for lone players too.
Keep in mind
- Card draws can limit which resources are available when you need them.
- Direct player interaction is minimal.
- The nature-manuscript theme is thin compared to the mechanics.
Who it's for
Great for families and casual strategy gamers ages 8 and up; plays well solo or with up to 4 players in about half an hour.
