About the game

Via Magica, a reworking of designer Paolo Mori's Rise of Augustus, challenges 2-6 players to complete objective cards by matching symbols drawn one at a time from a shared bag. Every symbol drawn benefits all players equally, but since the bag contains more of some symbols than others, choosing which objectives to pursue, and when to add a new one to your plate, is the heart of the game's strategy. Players start with six objectives and select three, then continue adding new ones from a shared pool as they complete their current goals. The first to complete seven objectives triggers the end of the game.

Hobbli's Notes

The shared-bag bingo-style drawing gives Via Magica a lovely tension, everyone benefits from every draw, but only if you chose objectives that need the right symbols. It's light and quick, making it easy to teach even to non-gamers, while still offering real decisions about risk versus reward when picking objectives. It won't satisfy players looking for direct player interaction, since progress is largely a race against the bag rather than against each other.

What we like

  • Simple shared-draw mechanic is easy to teach to all ages.
  • Push-your-luck objective selection adds real decision-making.
  • Scales well from 2 up to 6 players.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime suits casual sessions.

Keep in mind

  • Limited direct player interaction since it's largely a shared race.
  • Light complexity may not satisfy experienced strategy gamers.
  • Luck of the bag draw can outweigh planning in some games.
