About the game

Tournament at Avalon sends players into Arthurian legend as they battle rival characters using cards of arrows, swords, deception, sorcery, and alchemy in a trick-taking combat format. Building on Tournament at Camelot, it adds new characters, cards, and mechanisms, along with informal diplomacy and alliances alongside the standard dueling. Godsend cards allow injured characters a dramatic comeback, while location panels reward whoever hosts each tournament round. The game ends when an opponent is injured to the point of death, and the healthiest character left is crowned tournament victor.

Hobbli's Notes

Tournament at Avalon layers extra diplomatic texture onto an already clever trick-taking combat system, and combining it with its predecessor opens up chaotic games for larger tables. The comeback potential from Godsend cards keeps eliminated-feeling players in the fight longer than you'd expect. Best enjoyed by a group who enjoys a bit of table talk alongside their card combat.

What we like

  • Unique trick-taking combat system with strong thematic flavor.
  • Asymmetric characters and companions add real variety.
  • Combines with Tournament at Camelot for expanded play.
  • Godsend cards create dramatic late-game comebacks.

Keep in mind

  • Take-that elements can frustrate players who fall behind early.
  • Full depth requires owning both Tournament games.
  • Luck of the draw affects individual duels.
