About the game

Set in Ming Dynasty China, Gùgōng casts players as powerful families jockeying for influence by exchanging gifts with Forbidden City officials. Each turn, you offer a gift card of higher value than the one you receive, forcing careful hand management and timing decisions. Along the way you'll travel the Grand Canal, purchase jade, help build the Great Wall, and secure decrees, all building toward a coveted audience with the Emperor.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team appreciates Gùgōng's clever hand-management puzzle, where the gift-exchange mechanism creates constant tension between short-term gain and long-term positioning. Its historical theme and elegant action-selection system make it a standout mid-weight euro. It rewards players who can plan several turns ahead without becoming overly punishing for newer strategy gamers.

What we like

  • Clever gift-exchange hand management creates constant meaningful tension.
  • Multiple paths to victory through jade, decrees, and imperial audience.
  • Elegant, well-integrated historical theme.
  • Accessible rules for a mid-weight strategy game.

Keep in mind

  • Card availability can occasionally create swingy situations.
  • Some players may find the action-selection puzzle repetitive over many plays.

Who it's for

Great for euro-game fans aged 12+ who enjoy hand management and area influence; plays well with 3-4 players.
