About the game
Mini Rails distills the classic stock-buying, track-laying train game into a streamlined experience that plays in under an hour. On your turn you must take exactly one of two actions, Buy Shares or Build Tracks, deciding when to invest in a company versus expanding its route network across the modular map. Your choice of which company to act for also determines turn order in the next round, adding a layer of tactical timing to every decision. With a variable setup on a modular board, the game offers a lighter, faster entry into the beloved 18xx genre.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a smart pocket-sized take on the 18xx formula, keeping the tension of stock investment and route-building while trimming the runtime dramatically. The turn-order-tied-to-company-choice twist adds a nice tactical wrinkle for a game this streamlined. It won't replace a full 18xx epic, but as a gateway or a quick fix for train-game fans, it earns its place on the shelf.
What we like
- Distills stock-and-track 18xx mechanics into a tight under-an-hour game.
- Simple two-action turn structure is easy for newcomers to grasp.
- Company-choice-driven turn order adds tactical depth.
- Modular map setup offers strong replayability.
Keep in mind
- Lighter depth compared to full-length 18xx titles.
- Turn order tied to company choice can feel restrictive to some players.
- Downtime may build up as player count increases.
Who it's for
Good for train-game and light economic strategy fans aged 10 and up, in groups of one to five, especially those wanting a faster taste of 18xx-style mechanics.
