About the game

After the Empire is a worker-placement game set in the chaos following Rome's fall, as players rule a medieval fiefdom threatened by an invading eastern army. Each season, players place worker tokens to gather resources, build advanced buildings, and recruit refugees, then harvest food and prepare for combat as invader cards reveal incoming forces. Old rivalries must be set aside to arm troops and repair cities quickly enough to survive. The lord or lady who best preserves their fiefdom and gold wins.

Hobbli's Notes

A solid worker-placement game that blends resource-building with escalating invader combat for real seasonal tension. It's a satisfying medieval euro overall, though it may feel like a slower burn next to flashier worker-placement titles.

What we like

  • Satisfying blend of economic building and combat tension.
  • Thematic medieval invasion narrative ties mechanics together well.
  • Worker placement rewards careful, forward-thinking planning.
  • Escalating invader threat keeps difficulty scaling naturally.

Keep in mind

  • Playtime runs around two hours per session.
  • Worker placement conflicts can create blocking frustration.
  • Moderate downtime can occur between player turns.
