About the game
A 4X-style card game for 2-5 players where you lead an interplanetary faction exploring uncharted space to build ships, research technology, and settle planets. Each turn you play from a hand of three double-sided Resource cards, choosing carefully since only two cards and one side of each may be used per turn. Ships let you raid aliens for valuable artifacts, Technology cards expand your options, and Planets provide ongoing resources: each card offering a choice between a Logistics or Operational use. With over two hundred cards, it aims to deliver a full 4X experience of exploration, expansion, and exploitation in under an hour.
Hobbli's Notes
Alien Artifacts impressively compresses the classic 4X experience into a card-driven engine that plays in about an hour, which is a real feat given how sprawling most 4X games are. The tight resource-card economy forces meaningful trade-offs every turn. It's a great pick for sci-fi fans who love 4X space games but don't always have three hours to spare. The drafting and variable phase order keep replayability high.
What we like
- Delivers a genuine 4X experience in under an hour.
- Clever double-sided resource card economy forces tough choices.
- Large card pool (200+) supports high replayability.
- Scales well from 2 to 5 players.
Keep in mind
- Card-based abstraction may feel less immersive than board-based 4X games.
- Tight resource constraints can be punishing for new players.
- Variable phase order adds a layer of complexity to track.
Who it's for
Good for 2-5 players aged 10+ who enjoy sci-fi strategy and 4X games but want a shorter, card-based format.
