About the game

Iron Dragon transplants the classic Empire Builder crayon-rail system into a fantasy world of elves, cat-people, trolls, and genetically engineered dragons pulling trains. Using erasable crayons, players draw rail lines across the board to connect cities, then use their networks to pick up and deliver goods for profit. Foremen of different fantasy races reduce terrain costs in their specialty regions, while ships let trains cross seas and bypass bottlenecks. It's a sprawling, long-form economic railroading game wrapped in a distinctive fantasy setting.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a real commitment, expect a multi-hour session, but the fantasy reskin of the Empire Builder system gives it a flavor unlike any other crayon-rail game. It's best reserved for a dedicated strategy group who loves long, meaty economic games.

What we like

  • Unique fantasy twist on the classic Empire Builder crayon-rail system.
  • Deep economic strategy in resource delivery and network building.
  • Distinct regional resources and races add strategic variety.
  • High replayability for fans of long-form strategy games.

Keep in mind

  • Very long playtime, often stretching to four hours.
  • High complexity and steep learning curve for newcomers.
  • Crayon-on-board presentation feels dated compared to modern components.
  • Not well suited to casual or large, mixed-experience groups.

Who it's for

Best for experienced strategy gamers aged 14 and up who enjoy long, economic route-building games, in groups of 2 to 6.
