About the game
In Castles of Mad King Ludwig, players act as building contractors constructing an ever-expanding castle for the eccentric King Ludwig, purchasing rooms from a rotating Master Builder and connecting hallways into a sprawling estate. Room prices are set by whichever player currently holds the Master Builder role, creating a clever push-and-pull of pricing and demand. End-game bonuses reward completing goals, popular room types, and matching the King's ever-changing demands.
Hobbli's Notes
This is one of our favorite tile-laying games because the pricing mechanic - where the Master Builder sets costs for everyone else - creates constant, friendly negotiation absent from most drafting games. It's approachable enough for family game night yet has real depth for players who enjoy optimizing room layouts.
What we like
- Clever pricing mechanic where players set each other's costs.
- Satisfying spatial puzzle building your own castle.
- Variable bonus goals keep the game fresh across plays.
- Approachable rules suitable for family game nights.
Keep in mind
- Player interaction is mostly indirect through pricing.
- Room availability can feel restrictive for late players.
- Some downtime while the Master Builder sets prices.
Who it's for
Great for ages 13+, families and puzzle-loving gamers, in groups of 1-4 who enjoy tile-laying and light economic tension.
