About the game

New Amsterdam casts players as Dutch patrons in the early colonial settlement that would become Manhattan, bidding on action lots to build businesses, work land, compete in elections, ship furs to Europe, and trade with the Lenape. As players claim more land, trade with the Lenape becomes progressively more complicated, adding an evolving layer of tension. Auction-driven turn order and area majority scoring create multiple viable paths to victory. It supports two to five players over a substantial 90-minute game.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team appreciates how New Amsterdam layers real historical texture - elections, trade, land grants - onto a meaty auction-driven economic engine. The interplay between bidding order and area control rewards players who can read the table. It's a heavier game that asks for patience but pays off with rich strategic depth.

What we like

  • Multiple paths to victory through elections, trade, and land.
  • Deep interaction between players' competing strategies.

Keep in mind

  • Notably high downtime between turns.
