About the game
Catan: Junior reimagines the classic Settlers of Catan formula for players as young as five, set on a ring of pirate-themed islands. Two to four players build hideouts and ships, gathering resources like wood, goats, molasses, and swords to expand their network across the islands. Players must also watch out for the mysterious Ghost Captain who lurks on Spooky Island. The first player to control seven pirate hideouts wins the game. With simplified trading, tile-based resources, and no complicated event cards, it's designed as a gentle, engaging introduction to the Catan series.
Hobbli's Notes
Catan: Junior does an excellent job of distilling the core resource-management and route-building appeal of Catan into something genuinely playable by young children, without feeling like a watered-down afterthought. Hobbli's team appreciates the pirate theme and Ghost Captain twist, which add just enough whimsy and light tension to keep kids engaged. It's a fantastic first strategy game and a natural stepping stone toward the full Catan experience.
What we like
- Simplified rules make it genuinely accessible for children as young as five.
- Playable with just two players thanks to a dedicated two-player map.
- Pirate theme and Ghost Captain add fun, light tension for kids.
- Serves as an excellent stepping stone toward the full Catan game.
Keep in mind
- Limited strategic depth compared to the full Settlers of Catan.
- Younger children may still need adult guidance for trading and planning.
- Simplified components mean it may be outgrown as children get older.
Who it's for
Perfect for families with kids ages 5+ playing in groups of 2-4, especially as a first strategy game before the full Catan experience.
