About the game

Hanabi is a cooperative card game in which players work together to build five fireworks displays in numerical order, one color at a time. The twist is that each player holds their cards facing outward, so they can see everyone else's hand but not their own. Players give each other limited hints about number or color to guide correct plays. Careful teamwork and deduction are required to avoid wasting the group's limited hints and lives before the display is complete.

Hobbli's Notes

Hanabi is a modern classic precisely because it turns a simple rule set into a deep test of communication and trust. The tension of deciding what a hint really implies never gets old, and it rewards groups who pay close attention to each other. It's wonderfully portable and quick, though very experienced groups sometimes develop unofficial hint conventions that can change the organic feel of the game.

What we like

  • Simple rules hide surprisingly deep deduction and teamwork.
  • Quick sessions of around 25 minutes make it easy to fit in.
  • Small, portable box travels well anywhere.
  • Genuinely cooperative play builds strong group communication.

Keep in mind

  • Purely cooperative format won't appeal to competitive players.
  • Experienced groups can develop hint conventions that feel less organic.
  • Bad luck in the draw can sink an otherwise well-played round.

Who it's for

Families and casual groups who enjoy cooperative deduction, ideal for 2 to 5 players ages 8 and up.
