About the game

The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game adapts the film trilogy into a two-sided collectible card game, with Free Peoples cards played against Shadow cards fueled by the Twilight Points opponents spend to fight back. Instead of elimination, characters accumulate wounds, and hand-filling (rather than simple drawing) creates a distinctive rhythm compared to most other CCGs. Designed by Chuck Kallenbach, Tom Lischke, and Mike Reynolds, it covers the story from the Fellowship's departure from Bag End to the destruction of the Ring at Mount Doom. Nineteen expansion sets were released before Decipher's license lapsed, giving collectors a deep card pool to build from.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a well-loved, if now out-of-print, entry in the CCG space - the hero/shadow twilight-point economy is a clever twist that feels distinct from Magic-style tapping systems. Fans of the films will enjoy how faithfully the cards track the movie trilogy's events and cast. Building a competitive deck today means hunting secondary markets, so it's more a nostalgia and collecting pursuit than an actively supported game.

What we like

  • Faithful adaptation of the beloved film trilogy's story and characters.
  • Innovative wound-based combat and hand-filling economy set it apart from typical CCGs.
  • Sane rarity distribution makes deck-building less punishing than many CCGs.
  • Large card pool across nineteen sets offers deep deck customization.

Keep in mind

  • Out of print, so acquiring cards requires the secondary market.
  • Collectible format means costs and availability can be barriers for new players.
  • Requires deck-building investment before you can play competitively.

Who it's for

Best for Lord of the Rings fans and CCG collectors aged 12+ who enjoy deck-building card games, in groups of 2-6.
