About the game
Cargo Noir puts you at the head of a smuggling family in a stylish 1950s noir setting, sailing between ports like Hong Kong, Bombay, Rotterdam, and New York to snap up illicit goods. Each turn you bid against rivals for cargo on display - bid too low and someone else may outbid you, but stand alone in a port and you can quietly move goods straight to your warehouse. Collected goods can be traded in to expand your fleet, buy Victory Spoils, or fund other advantages, with the player amassing the most Spoils by game's end winning. Designer Serge Laget built the whole game around a simple, addictive 'bid up or walk away' auction core.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team enjoys Cargo Noir's tight, tense auction mechanism - the simple 'last bidder wins' rule creates constant push-your-luck decisions about when to hold firm and when to fold. The noir smuggling theme and Days of Wonder production values make it an easy, atmospheric sell at the table.
What we like
- Simple, tense core auction mechanism is easy to grasp and hard to master.
- Atmospheric 1950s noir smuggling theme with strong production values.
- Multiple paths to victory through fleet expansion and Victory Spoils.
- Standing alone in a port rewards patience over aggression.
Keep in mind
- Downtime can build with a full five players (downtime grade C).
- Auction-heavy design may not appeal to players who dislike bidding mechanics.
- Can feel repetitive over multiple plays without expansions.
Who it's for
Great for families and casual gamers aged 8+ who enjoy bidding and set collection games with 2-5 players.
