About the game

Once Upon a Time is a cooperative-yet-competitive storytelling card game in which players weave a fairy tale together using cards depicting classic story elements: characters, places, objects, and events. One player acts as Storyteller, narrating toward their secret Happy Ever After ending, while the others interject with their own cards to seize control of the tale. The first player to play all their cards and land their own ending wins the round. With no fixed board and endless combinations of story elements, no two games play out the same way. It's playful, unpredictable, and built for laughter around the table.

Hobbli's Notes

This is one of the best games for breaking the ice with a mixed group: kids, grandparents, and hardcore gamers can all jump in and have fun. The 'story hijacking' mechanic is genuinely clever, turning a simple card game into spontaneous improv theatre. It works best with players who are willing to ham it up a little; shy groups may need a warm-up round first.

What we like

  • Encourages spontaneous creativity and storytelling.
  • Very easy to learn for nearly any age group.
  • Great icebreaker for mixed or unfamiliar groups.
  • Minimal downtime keeps everyone engaged.
  • Endless replayability from card combinations.

Keep in mind

  • Enjoyment depends heavily on the group's willingness to roleplay.
  • Very little strategic depth for gamers seeking a challenge.
  • Can run long if players savor storytelling too much.

Who it's for

Perfect for families and creative types ages 8 and up, especially groups of 4-6 who enjoy improvisation and humor.
