About the game

Modern Art Card Game, also released as Masters Gallery, condenses Reiner Knizia's classic art-auction design into a lighter, faster card game. Players play masterpiece cards to boost the market value of five different artists, with special cards letting you draw extra, play a second card, or spike an artist's price. Every time enough works from one artist hit the table, a round ends and those pieces sell for cash based on that artist's popularity. Over four rounds, the smartest reader of the shifting art market wins by amassing the most money.

Hobbli's Notes

This is Knizia at his most elegant, a simple, fast card game hiding real bluffing and market-timing depth underneath. It captures much of what makes the original Modern Art auction game great without needing the bidding overhead, making it a great gateway into his design philosophy. Some purists prefer the original board game's auction mechanic for the extra tension it brings, but as a 30-minute filler this version is hard to beat.

What we like

  • Elegant, fast-playing design from a legendary game designer.
  • Market-timing and bluffing add real depth to simple rules.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime fits easily into any game night.
  • Accessible to new players while rewarding experienced ones.

Keep in mind

  • Lacks the direct-auction tension of the original board game version.
  • Card luck can influence which artists you're able to boost.
  • Light theme may feel thin for players wanting a bigger box experience.

Who it's for

Great for families and casual gamers ages 8+ who enjoy light bluffing and market-timing card games, in groups of 2-5.
