About the game
Cosmic Encounter is a classic game of galactic conquest in which each player leads an alien race with its own unique power, encountering rivals to try to claim colonies on their planets. Encounters unfold through hidden card play, shifting alliances, and rampant negotiation, with any player able to invite allies from either side. The mix of wildly asymmetric alien powers and constant political maneuvering means no two games play the same.
Hobbli's Notes
We consider Cosmic Encounter a must-own for groups who love negotiation and chaos - the alien powers constantly break the "rules" in delightful ways, and alliances can flip a losing position into a shared victory in an instant. Decades after release it remains one of the most inventive multiplayer designs ever made.
What we like
- Wildly asymmetric alien powers keep every game fresh.
- Negotiation and alliances create constant table talk.
- Multiple players can share victory through alliances.
- Decades of expansions add near-infinite variety.
Keep in mind
- Can run long with 5 players and lots of negotiation.
