About the game

Babel is a two-player card game set among warring ancient tribes, where players use a hand of tribe-specific cards to build temples, sabotage each other, and gather resources across five regions of the ancient world. Discarding cards lets you move between regions, place cards to build influence, or activate unique tribal skills when you've formed a matching set. Building temples requires both enough workers on hand and having already completed the previous level, creating a race to stack up power. The game ends when one player builds enough temple levels to win outright, or reaches a threshold that forces a race to a higher score.

Hobbli's Notes

Babel is a tightly wound two-player duel with a satisfying push-pull of resource gathering and direct sabotage. The tribe-based special skills give each region real personality and create interesting tactical branches. Its escalating win conditions add real tension as the endgame approaches. A good pick for couples or friends who enjoy competitive, take-that-style two-player card games.

What we like

  • Purpose-built for two players with tight, direct interaction.
  • Unique tribal abilities add tactical variety.
  • Escalating win conditions create real endgame tension.
  • Ancient civilizations theme is nicely realized through the mechanics.

Keep in mind

  • Take-that elements may not suit players who dislike direct sabotage.
  • Rules around temple building and sets take some getting used to.
  • Limited to exactly two players, unlike more flexible card games.
