About the game
Biblios casts players as abbots competing to build the greatest sacred library, balancing limited gold against the need for skilled workers and resources. The game unfolds in two stages: a donation phase where cards are distributed by a fixed procedure, followed by an auction phase where players bid gold to acquire the cards they need most. Victory points come from winning any of five categories, Illuminators, Scribes, Manuscripts, Scrolls, or Supplies, determined by whoever holds the most in that category, with category values shifting throughout the game. Quick to teach but full of subtle bluffing and timing decisions, it rewards players who read the table well. A tight 30-minute playtime makes it an easy, replayable filler with real strategic bite.
Hobbli's Notes
Biblios is a masterclass in economy of design: in just 30 minutes, it delivers real auction tension, bluffing, and shifting priorities with a small deck of cards. The changing category values keep every game different, and the medieval monastery theme gives it just enough flavor without getting in the way. A fantastic light-to-mid filler for gamers who like a bit of bite in their bidding games.
What we like
- Tight 30-minute playtime with surprising strategic depth.
- Two-stage donation-and-auction structure creates fresh tension each round.
- Shifting category values keep every playthrough different.
- Easy to teach despite its subtle bidding decisions.
Keep in mind
- Auction-heavy gameplay may not appeal to players who dislike bidding mechanics.
- Small card count means limited variety across a single session.
- Best strategic nuance may go unnoticed on a first play.
