About the game

Quarto is a sharp two-player abstract strategy classic played on a 4×4 grid with sixteen pieces, each defined by four different attributes: color, height, shape, and hollowness. The goal is to place the fourth piece in a row sharing at least one common trait, but the twist is that your opponent always chooses which piece you must place. This forces both players to think several moves ahead, weighing every piece's dangers before handing it over. Games are quick, usually around 20 minutes, but the tension and depth rival much longer strategy games. It's a beloved, award-winning design that has stood the test of time since 1991.

Hobbli's Notes

We consider Quarto one of the sharpest small-box abstracts ever made: the reversed-selection twist (your opponent picks your piece) turns simple pattern-matching into a genuine mind game. It's easy to teach in a couple of minutes but rewards deep, careful reading of the board. As a pure two-player game, it's ideal for a quick strategic duel rather than a group activity. Its timeless design has kept it relevant for decades.

What we like

  • Innovative "opponent picks your piece" twist creates deep strategic tension.
  • Extremely quick to teach and play.
  • Compact, elegant, and portable.
  • Award-winning design with decades of staying power.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two-player, so it doesn't work for groups.
  • Purely abstract theme won't appeal to players wanting narrative or immersion.
  • Can feel too austere for players who prefer more components or variety.

Who it's for

Ideal for two players aged 8+ who enjoy sharp, quick abstract strategy duels.
