About the game

Animal Upon Animal is a simple, charming stacking game where players carefully balance wooden animal pieces into a towering pyramid. Each turn, a roll of the die tells you to add one or two animals to the stack, hand an animal to another player to place, or extend the base for everyone else to build on. If pieces topple off, you get some of them back, and the first player to place all their animals wins. It's a tactile dexterity game aimed squarely at young children but genuinely fun across ages.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli has always found this a reliable family classic: the cute wooden animals and simple stacking tension make it an easy win for kids' game nights, and it holds up surprisingly well with adults too.

What we like

  • Simple enough to teach to very young children.
  • Charming, tactile wooden animal pieces.
  • Quick 15-minute play sessions.
  • Tension builds naturally as the stack grows taller.

Keep in mind

  • Limited depth for older or more experienced gamers.
  • Outcomes are largely luck- and dexterity-driven.
  • Wooden pieces can show wear over repeated play.

Who it's for

Perfect for young children aged 4+ and mixed-age family groups looking for a light, tactile dexterity game.
