About the game

Oltre Mare casts two to five players as Venetian merchants sailing along historic trade routes into the unknown lands of Barbaria, seeking precious wares and rich stocks. On a turn, players trade goods with each other, then play cards from hand to earn money, draw cards, or move their ship on the map to unlock special powers - all while cards played also represent cargo loaded aboard ship. The more matching Goods a player ships, the greater their payoff at the game's end, but an ever-present Pirate action threatens to disrupt careful planning. Balancing trading, card play, and cargo strategy across a Mediterranean setting drives each session's tension.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team enjoys the blend of trading and light push-your-luck tension from the pirate threat - it keeps an otherwise calm trading game from ever feeling too safe. The negotiation phase rewards socially savvy players, which can be a highlight or a drawback depending on the group. It's an approachable design for its complexity level and holds up well as a mid-weight trading game.
