About the game

In Kano, two to four players create their own Emakimono, a traditional Japanese painted handscroll, by collecting and arranging vibrant paint pots. Each turn, players may swap adjacent pots on a shared central mat to set up their ideal move before collecting at least one pigment for their scroll. Careful spatial planning and contract fulfillment decide whose handscroll becomes the true masterpiece.

Hobbli's Notes

Kano turns the creation of a traditional Japanese painted handscroll into a spatial puzzle, as players swap and collect paint pots from a shared central mat to fill out their own scroll. The tension between setting up the perfect swap for yourself and not handing your opponents exactly what they need gives every turn real weight, and the contract-fulfillment structure rewards players who plan several turns ahead. It's a quiet, contemplative kind of game that rewards careful spatial thinking over direct confrontation.

What we like

  • Elegant spatial puzzle around collecting and arranging paint pots.
  • Contract-fulfillment structure rewards careful multi-turn planning.
  • Shared central mat creates meaningful indirect interaction between players.
  • Beautiful Emakimono-inspired presentation and theme.

Keep in mind

  • Quiet, cerebral pace may not suit players seeking more direct conflict.
  • Limited category tagging on BGG makes it a bit of an unknown quantity for genre-based browsing.
  • Spatial optimization puzzles can feel punishing when an early swap goes wrong.

Who it's for
