About the game

Great Western Trail: El Paso is a standalone entry in the acclaimed Great Western Trail trilogy, set in the booming cattle hub of El Paso at the end of the 19th century. Players buy and manage cattle, hire cowboys, builders, and engineers, and construct buildings that unlock new actions along the trail. Contributing to the railroad's expansion earns influential board seats that provide budget boosts and, later, victory points. It's a slightly leaner introduction to the series' beloved deck and route-building formula, with a strong solo mode included.

Hobbli's Notes

El Paso does a great job condensing what makes Great Western Trail special into a shorter, more approachable package without losing the series' signature tension between deck-building and route optimization. It works nicely both as a newcomer's first taste of the trilogy and a quicker fix for veterans on a game night with limited time. The solo mode holds up well too.

What we like

  • Streamlined standalone entry ideal for series newcomers.
  • Strong built-in solo mode.
  • Satisfying deck-building and route optimization.
  • Rich American West cattle-trading theme.

Keep in mind

  • Still moderately complex for very casual players.
  • Series veterans may find it familiar rather than fresh.
  • Requires strategic foresight to optimize efficiently.

Who it's for

Great for euro-gamers aged 12+ who enjoy deck-building and route optimization, playing solo or with up to 4 players.
