About the game

Iliad is a two-player tile-placement strategy game by Reiner Knizia set during the Trojan War, with Hector and Achilles vying for the favor of the gods. On each turn, players place one of two tiles from their hand adjacent to an opponent's tile, optionally triggering its special ability to shift the balance of power. When a row or column fills, the player with the highest total strength claims a success token that can grant a god's favor or valuable points. The first game in Knizia's Mythos Collection, Iliad delivers tight tactical trade-offs in a quick, elegant package.

Hobbli's Notes

A sharp, tense two-player abstract from Knizia: every tile placement matters, and the tug-of-war over gods' favor keeps games close right to the final tile. A great pick for couples or friends who enjoy quick, cerebral duels.

What we like

  • Elegant, tightly designed tile-placement puzzle from a proven designer.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime with real tactical tension throughout.
  • Symmetrical tile pools ensure fair, competitive matches.
  • Strong mythological theme adds flavor to an abstract core.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly two players limits its use for groups.
  • Abstract presentation may feel dry for players wanting strong narrative.
  • Limited variability once the tile pool strategies are learned.
