About the game

Waypoints turns hiking into a paper-and-pencil roll-and-write: each turn a die determines the day's weather, which affects how far you can travel across a shared landscape of mountains, valleys, lakes, and woods. All players simultaneously draw their own route from waypoint to waypoint, choosing whether to brave harder terrain for bigger rewards. Over four days of hiking, everyone ends up with a unique personal map, scoring points for the animals and features they encountered along the way. It's a solo-friendly, low-footprint game that captures the flavor of trail planning without any real hiking involved. With print-and-play components, it's easy to bring anywhere.

Hobbli's Notes

Waypoints scratches that flip-and-write itch while layering in a genuinely thematic hiking feel; the weather die forcing you to adapt your route mid-hike is a nice touch. It plays fast and scales easily since everyone works on their own sheet at once, and the solo mode holds up well for a quiet night in. It's light on interaction, so groups craving direct conflict will want to look elsewhere.

What we like

  • Simultaneous play means no downtime even with a large group.
  • Weather-driven randomness keeps each hike feeling different.
  • Solo mode is fully supported and enjoyable.
  • Print-and-play format is easy to bring while traveling.

Keep in mind

  • Very low player interaction compared to other roll-and-write games.
  • Print-and-play production feels plain next to boxed alternatives.
  • Limited strategic depth for players wanting heavier decision-making.

Who it's for
