About the game
Kavango casts players as Conservation Experts building a thriving wildlife nature reserve across the wildernesses of Southern Africa. Over three simultaneous-turn rounds of card drafting, players complete research tasks to earn money, protect vulnerable species, and grow their personal ecosystem. With 160 unique species cards and 45 research cards, the game aims for a thematic, realistic take on African conservation efforts. It's a strategic drafting game with an educational conservation message at its core.
Hobbli's Notes
Kavango stands out for its genuine environmental theme, grounded in the designers' real conservation work in Botswana. The drafting and set-collection engine gives real depth without becoming overwhelming, and the simultaneous turns keep downtime low. It should appeal to fans of nature-themed strategy games like Wingspan or Ark Nova. As a newer release, we'd love more table time with it before making stronger comparisons.
What we like
- Strong, authentic conservation theme woven into the mechanics.
- Simultaneous turns keep downtime low even at higher player counts.
- Large card variety (160+ species) offers high replayability.
- Supports solo play for a strategic drafting experience.
Keep in mind
- Newer release with less community track record than established titles.
- Simultaneous drafting may require careful upfront teaching.
- Set-collection scoring can feel opaque to first-time players.
Who it's for
Suited to strategy gamers aged 10 and up who enjoy nature-themed drafting games, playable solo or in groups up to 5.
