About the game

Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux drops players into the early Viking Age as competing shipwrights racing to build the greatest fleet on the North Sea. Over five rounds, players draft village cards to gather oak, wool, and iron, recruit Jarls, attract Heroes, and manage gold to construct Longships and Buildings for Victory Points. This Redux edition rebuilds the core gameplay from the ground up while keeping the thematic heart of the original. It's a tight resource-and-drafting engine game from Garphill Games designer Shem Phillips.

Hobbli's Notes

Redux takes everything fans liked about the original Shipwrights and tightens the engine considerably, and it shows in how smoothly the rounds flow. The drafting of village cards creates constant, meaningful tension over which resources and helpers to prioritize. Solo players are well served here too, making it a flexible pick regardless of group size. A satisfying mid-weight entry in the Garphill Games catalog.

What we like

  • Satisfying resource-to-ship engine building.
  • Drafting keeps interaction high across all five rounds.
  • Solo mode offers a fulfilling single-player experience.
  • Rebuilt Redux system refines and streamlines the original design.

Keep in mind

  • Some fiddly resource tracking for newcomers.
  • The Viking theme is fairly light rather than deeply immersive.
  • Best appreciated with some prior Garphill Games familiarity.

Who it's for

Good for groups of 1-5, ages 13 and up, who enjoy resource-management and drafting games with a light Viking theme.
