About the game
Caldera Park is a bingo-style animal-grouping puzzle game set in the wilderness of North America, designed by Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer. Each turn, one player reveals a species or watering-hole feature with a terrain requirement, and every player places a matching token on their personal park board, racing to build the largest animal families while balancing access to water and weather risks. Over five rounds, available spaces shrink and unpredictable weather tokens disrupt careful plans, adding tension to the puzzle. Scoring rewards your largest family of each species plus fully populated terrains. It's an accessible, interactive puzzle game and a natural follow-up for fans of Savannah Park.
Hobbli's Notes
Caldera Park delivers a tight, satisfying puzzle experience with just enough player interaction via shared feature and terrain choices to keep everyone engaged, even outside their own turn. Its low downtime and short playtime make it an easy addition to any game night, and the North American wildlife theme is a nice change of pace. It doesn't reinvent the roll-and-write/bingo genre, but the balance of family-building and terrain requirements is well tuned. A great pick for fans of Kramer and Kiesling's puzzly, elegant designs.
What we like
- Low downtime keeps all players engaged even during others' turns.
- Elegant, easy-to-teach ruleset from veteran designers Kiesling and Kramer.
- Shared feature selection creates meaningful interaction despite the solitaire-style boards.
- Weather tokens add a layer of unpredictability to the puzzle.
Keep in mind
- Bingo-style tile marking may feel too abstract for some players.
- Limited strategic depth compared to heavier territory-building games.
- Replay variety depends mostly on random feature and weather draws.
Who it's for
Puzzle-game fans ages 8-10 and up, great for families and solo players who enjoy quick, low-downtime set-collection games.
