About the game
Amun-Re: 20th Anniversary Edition revives Reiner Knizia's classic auction game of ancient Egypt, where players bid for provinces along the Nile, farm and trade for profit, and use their riches to construct magnificent pyramids. This anniversary edition adds new optional modules, including an Officials variant, Afterlife tomb tiles, Statues, and a Pharaoh mini-expansion, layered onto the beloved two-phase auction and building structure. Careful bidding, timing, and resource management determine who becomes the greatest pharaoh. It's a modern-classic economic game with fresh replayability options for veteran fans and new players alike.
Hobbli's Notes
Amun-Re remains one of Knizia's tightest auction designs decades later, and this anniversary edition's modular expansions give longtime fans genuine reasons to revisit it. The two-round bidding structure, bid on a province, then decide whether to keep it, is an elegant twist that keeps every auction meaningful. Downtime can run high in larger groups since auctions require everyone's attention, but the payoff is a deeply satisfying economic puzzle.
What we like
- Elegant, tense two-stage auction mechanism from a celebrated designer.
- New modules add meaningful variety and replayability.
- Rewards long-term planning and resource management.
- Attractive anniversary production with Vincent Dutrait art.
Keep in mind
- High downtime grade means auctions can slow down with more players.
- Complexity may be steep for casual or new gamers.
- Optional modules can add setup time and rules overhead.
Who it's for
A great fit for experienced euro-gamers ages 12+ who enjoy auction and area-influence games, playing in groups of 2-5.
