About the game

Goa places players at the head of competing trading companies during the age of spice, ships, and colonization. Each round opens with an auction where players bid on plantations, ships, colonists, and income tiles, followed by a phase of actions to advance along personal technology tracks. Balancing your own steady development against nominating items that will draw bids from rivals creates a satisfying tension between solitaire optimization and social auction play. It's a tightly designed euro with a strong sense of long-term progression.

Hobbli's Notes

An underrated Rüdiger Dorn design that rewards patient technology development. The auction phase keeps things socially engaged even though much of the game is about optimizing your own engine.

What we like

  • Auction phase blends social interaction with personal optimization.
  • Multiple technology tracks offer varied strategic approaches.
  • Rewards patient, long-term planning.
  • Well-balanced tension between self-development and bidding.

Keep in mind

  • Can feel a bit dry or solitaire-ish outside the auction phase.
  • Moderate rules overhead for new players.
  • Auction dynamics can be swingy with inexperienced bidders.

Who it's for

Great for euro-strategy fans aged 12+ who enjoy auction and tech-track games; best with 3-4 players for a meatier mid-weight session.
