About the game
Whale Riders is a Reiner Knizia design that sends players sailing along the fabled Ice Coast atop giant ice whales, buying and selling goods at bustling ports before winter sets in. With two actions per turn, you must decide whether to sail further down the coast, buy or sell resources, or draw more order cards, all while racing opponents who might snatch up the best deals first. Collecting precious pearls along the way is key, and once all the pearls have been purchased, the game ends and the richest pearl collector wins. It's a fast 45-minute race of market timing and route decisions wrapped in a charming arctic adventure theme.
Hobbli's Notes
This is classic Knizia: simple rules hiding real tension around buying low, selling high, and racing opponents to the best opportunities. The whale-riding theme and charming art give it more personality than many abstract trading games, and the tight action economy keeps decisions meaningful despite the light ruleset. It's a great pick for groups who enjoy elegant market games without a steep learning curve.
