About the game

In Canvas, players compete as painters, layering three translucent art cards on top of each other to create unique paintings. Icons on each card are revealed or hidden depending on how the cards are stacked, turning composition into a clever visual puzzle. Cards are drafted from a row where position determines cost, paid with Inspiration tokens. Once a player has completed and scored three paintings against the round's Scoring cards, the game ends and the highest score wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Canvas stands out for its clever layering gimmick, transforming translucent cards into a genuinely satisfying visual puzzle rather than a gimmick. The changing Scoring cards each game keep the puzzle fresh, and the low complexity makes it easy to teach despite the depth of the layering decisions. It's a great lighter option for groups who enjoy set collection and drafting without a long time investment.

What we like

  • Unique card-layering mechanic creates a genuinely fresh puzzle experience.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime fits easily into a game night.
  • Solid solo mode makes it flexible for any group size.
  • Changing scoring cards keep replays feeling different each time.

Keep in mind

  • Limited strategic depth may not satisfy dedicated heavy gamers.
  • Availability of desired art cards can feel restrictive on a given turn.
  • The puzzle can start to feel repetitive after many plays.
