About the game
RoboRally sends programmable robots racing through a hazard-laden factory floor, as players secretly plan five-move programs each round hoping their robot survives lasers, pits, and conveyor belts to reach checkpoints first. The 2016 edition reworks damage into cards shuffled into your own deck, replacing older penalty systems with sneaky spam, viruses, and other nasty surprises. Since everyone programs simultaneously, chaos regularly erupts as robots collide and knock each other off course. Designed by Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield, it's a beloved classic of programmed-movement racing. Expect equal parts clever planning and gleeful pandemonium.
Hobbli's Notes
RoboRally remains one of the best examples of programmed-movement gameplay, where careful planning collides head-on with chaotic randomness. We appreciate how the 2016 edition's deck-based damage system smooths out some of the older edition's harsher penalties while keeping the sabotage-heavy spirit intact. It can run long with a full table, but the laughter generated by robots careening off the board makes up for it. A must-try for fans of programming-based racing games.
What we like
- Programmed-movement racing creates unique tactical planning under uncertainty.
- 2016 edition's deck-based damage system reduces frustrating lockouts.
- Simultaneous action selection keeps all players engaged at once.
- Designed by legendary game designer Richard Garfield.
Keep in mind
- Playtime can stretch long, especially with a full six-player table.
- Take-that sabotage elements may frustrate players who dislike direct conflict.
- Higher player counts can increase downtime and confusion.
Who it's for
Great for groups aged 10+ who enjoy chaotic, programmed-movement racing games, ideally with 4-6 players who don't mind some direct sabotage.
