About the game
Yamataï challenges 2-4 players to build palaces, torii, and personal buildings across the land of Yamatai using colored ships drafted from a row of action tiles. Each turn you select a tile, place its ships adjacent to existing ones or from one of five entryways, then either harvest resources or construct on qualifying vacant spaces. Connected personal buildings pay out money based on how many you own, and banked ships can be spent on unique specialists with powerful one-time abilities. Turn order shifts each round based on the tiles players chose, adding a layer of tactical timing to every decision.
Hobbli's Notes
Yamataï's tile-drafting-meets-turn-order system creates a wonderfully tense push and pull over both resources and timing. Bruno Cathala's design rewards players who can plan several moves ahead while staying flexible about the ships available each round. The board looks gorgeous, even if the theme stays fairly abstract in practice.
What we like
- Elegant ship-placement and network-building puzzle.
- Tile-drafting turn order creates meaningful strategic tension.
- Gorgeous modular board and strong production values.
- Specialists add asymmetric strategic options each game.
Keep in mind
- Moderate rules overhead can slow down first plays.
- Player interaction is mostly indirect, centered on board competition.
- Theme feels somewhat abstract compared to the mechanics on display.
Who it's for
Great for euro-gamers aged 13+ who enjoy tile-drafting and network-building strategy games; 2-4 players.
