About the game
Codenames: Pictures reimagines the hit party game with image-based cards instead of words, challenging spymasters to give one-word clues that connect multiple pictures at once. Two rival teams race to identify all their secret agents scattered across a grid of images while avoiding the enemy's agents and the deadly assassin. The visual format opens up wilder, more associative clue-giving than the original word version, and works great alongside it or as a standalone game. It's fast to teach, quick to play, and scales up to 8 players. A perfect blend of team deduction and clever wordplay for any size gathering.
Hobbli's Notes
Codenames: Pictures is a fantastic entry point for groups mixing native and non-native speakers, since image associations are often easier and funnier to reach for than exact words. It keeps all the tension and 'aha' moments of the original Codenames while opening up delightfully weird visual connections. A great party staple that never really gets old.
What we like
- Picture-based clues are more accessible than word-only Codenames.
- Scales smoothly from small groups up to 8 players.
- Quick 15-minute playtime fits easily into any game night.
- Combines well with original Codenames decks for variety.
Keep in mind
- Loses some of the wordplay charm of the original word version.
- Requires a spymaster willing to give clear, clever clues.
- Assassin card can feel harsh for very new players.
Who it's for
Perfect for ages 10 and up, large groups of 2-8, and mixed skill or language groups at parties or family gatherings.
