About the game
Arkwright drops players into the Industrial Revolution, running up to four factories across England's late 18th century. You'll hire workers, replace them with machines, manage share value, and set prices in a fluctuating market shaped by supply, quality, and demand. Each round, action tokens are placed on an administration board, with higher payments unlocking more powerful moves. Over four rounds of production and five rounds of overall play, you'll navigate loans, colonial shipping contracts, and random events to build the most valuable block of shares. It's one of the heaviest and most respected economic simulations in the hobby.
Hobbli's Notes
Arkwright is not for the faint of heart: this is a dense, unforgiving economic simulation that rewards players who love spreadsheets as much as strategy. The interplay between share value, production, and market pricing creates a genuinely different game every session depending on how aggressively you expand. It's brutally satisfying when your factory network clicks into place, but the learning curve and length demand a committed group.
What we like
- Offers a genuinely deep economic simulation with multiple viable paths to victory.
- Share value and market pricing create constant meaningful tension.
- High replayability thanks to the many strategic combinations of factories, shipping, and shares.
- Rewards careful long-term planning over short-term gains.
Keep in mind
- At up to 240 minutes, it demands a serious time commitment.
- The steep learning curve makes it unfriendly to first-time players.
- Considerable downtime can occur while other players calculate their moves.
Who it's for
Hardcore economic-game enthusiasts who enjoy long, complex simulations; best for small groups of 2-4 experienced players.
