About the game
In La Isla, players lead a team of five scientists exploring an uncharted island to capture animal species for study and points. Simultaneous card selection grants special powers, gathers resources, and moves scientists onto camps surrounding animal spaces. Completing a ring of scientists around an animal claims it, and cards can increase an animal's scoring value over time. Designed by Stefan Feld, the modular circular board changes shape each game.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editors appreciate the layered simultaneous-selection card system: Feld's knack for interlocking small decisions is on full display here. A satisfying mid-weight puzzle with a light nature theme.
What we like
- Layered card system creates meaningful simultaneous decisions.
- Satisfying scaling mechanic for animal values over time.
- Modular circular board adds setup variety.
- Moderate 60-minute playtime for the strategic depth offered.
Keep in mind
- Card display management can be fiddly for new players.
- The race to surround animal spaces can feel swingy.
- Theme is fairly thin compared to the mechanics.
