About the game
Coal Baron (published in Europe as Glück Auf) sends players deep into the mines as coal barons competing over three rounds to extract coal, fulfill contracts, and manage a personal elevator shaft. Worker placement lets you occupy action spaces, but you can also pay to displace another player's worker to snag a coveted spot. Balancing coal quality, contract fulfillment, and cash flow is the heart of this tight, mid-weight euro from Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer.
Hobbli's Notes
Coal Baron is a lean, satisfying worker-placement game that rewards efficient planning without demanding hours of rules overhead. The ability to bump opponents off spaces for a price adds a nice layer of tension missing from many quieter euros.
What we like
- Tight worker placement with meaningful blocking and displacement decisions.
- Contract fulfillment gives clear, satisfying strategic goals.
- Manageable playtime for the depth it offers.
- Well-themed mining production from a respected design team.
Keep in mind
- Can suffer from analysis paralysis with experienced players.
- Some luck in which contracts become available.
- Dry industrial theme may not excite thematic gamers.
Who it's for
A solid pick for euro-game fans who enjoy worker placement and contract fulfillment; best with 2 to 4 players in a dedicated strategy session.
